Onyx Point Sponsors SELF

Hanover, MD, 13 June 2017

For the past year I have traveled all over the country to different technology events and conferences.  This past weekend I found myself in Charlotte, NC at the Southeast LinuxFest or SELF.  This is what I would call a grassroots event made up of a variety of technical people from all industries and all walks of life.  And you know what?!  I love this event!  I met a retired military man in his 60’s that pen tests with the best of them.  I met someone else who builds cars for a living who spends his free time on his passion; linux.  The event staff are friendly, accommodating, and very appreciative of support.

When attending you can choose to attend presentations on anything from “Securing Automated Decryption” to “Chewie vs. Jar-Jar”, categorized as a “/dev/random” talk, it explores the design and linguistics of these Star Wars characters!  Right?!  Good stuff.  This is not your typical stuffy, salesy event.  There really is something for everyone that has a passion for technology based in and around linux.

Onyx Point was honored to have Trevor Vaughan be selected as one of the SELF 2017 presenters.  His presentation, “Regulatory Compliance with Open Source Software”, focused on the background and technologies used by SIMP to help bring automation compliance for RedHat and CentOS based systems to the public and private sectors.  This presentation really resonated for the SELF attendees who are concerned about how the world of technology is moving towards one where security and compliance are a necessity regardless of industry.

SELF was first hosted in 2009 and the community has grown year by year.  If you are looking for an event where you can learn more about Linux and Open Source Software, I would highly recommend attending SELF.
