Onyx Point, Inc. is a company invested in its community. The company founders have long since been involved with various organizations on a personal level and encourage all of their employees to also be active within their own communities

Jessica Sauers, a Program Manager for Onyx Point, Inc., is not only a kitten foster for the Baltimore Humane Society, but she is also an advocate and volunteer for the House of Ruth Maryland.

Per their website, the House of Ruth Maryland was founded in May of 1977 as a collaborative effort between women’s organizations, religious groups, service providers, and other locally elected officials. It was their goal to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and their children. By November 1977 the House of Ruth Maryland had opened their first crisis shelter. Since then, the non-profit has expanded to over 90 staff members and offers four counseling locations within Maryland to women and children seeking protection.

According to the National Statistics Domestic Violence Fact Sheet, one in every four women will experience intimate partner violence in her lifetime. This statistic is what keeps Jessica motivated to work with the House of Ruth Maryland. She says, “I’ve made it one of my personal journeys to support the House of Ruth by devoting time as an advocate to help make resources available for those in need. In addition, I support working towards creating awareness and reform with legislative laws concerning the protection of women and children. This begins at the basic level of educating others about protection orders, safety planning, and system change.”

Jessica continues to explain her devotion to the House of Ruth Maryland by saying their goals, staff, and community is rooted in a deep compassion for others. Their published mission is to lead the fight to end violence against women and their children by confronting the attitudes, behaviors, and systems that sustain it, and by providing victims with resources that are critical to rebuild their lives safely and free of fear. Since Jessica’s journey with House of Ruth began, she has been a guest speaker during the annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner as well as has been interviewed on the radio on their behalf.

The House of Ruth’s vision statement is clear, direct, and profound; “One day, every woman in Maryland will be safe in her own home.” This organization, its staff, and its volunteers –including Jessica– are fearless in their quest to end violence against women and their children. They are never willing to compromise on justice which is a true testimony of their goodwill for others.

Jessica reflects with a lot of sentiment when she thinks about the time she has volunteered with the House of Ruth Maryland. She says, “I cherish my experience because it brings to light the true meaning of selflessness. It has been a personal goal of mine to show more appreciation and gratitude towards others and not let life’s daily demands get in the way. I learned from House of Ruth Maryland that helping others makes me truly appreciate life and find more meaning from it.”

Onyx Point, Inc. is a proud sponsor of House of Ruth’s adopt-a-family program. Each year House of Ruth Maryland asks corporate organizations for help, including building a wishlist that directly supports the emergency House of Ruth Maryland shelters. These donations are distributed through multiple programs including “Basket of Smiles” and “Brighten a Child’s Day.” It’s a great way to get the company involved with the community and create awareness for House of Ruth.

The House of Ruth Maryland does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status in any of its activities or operations.
